What we do

At PDSG, we aim to bridge the gap between Industry and Academia by providing students with opportunities to gain experience outside of the classroom. PDSG looks to collaborate with companies and organizations to solve their data challenges. Some of goals include coordinating projects that allow students to dive into real-world datasets while simultaneously developing their technical skills. Hold workshops to demonstrate data science tools and techniques and bring in data professionals to talk to students about their fields and careers. PDSG strives to make it easier for students to learn from and teach each other industrially relevant data science skills.

WHO ARE WE?

Representing students from various departments and programs across the University, the Penn Data Science Group represents an extremely diverse set of individuals. The growing field of data science naturally attracts the top students looking to explore this new and exciting field. Accordingly, the majority of PDSG membership is made up of PhD’s and Masters students looking to explore the field.

Undergraduates from the University of Pennsylvania also play a vital role within the group, through assisting with projects, helping running and organizing events and generally looking for ways to learn more about the emerging field of data science.

This diversity of membership is what have allowed for the many accomplishments of PDSG and is one of the core reasons why PDSG occupies the place of one of the premier data science groups at the University of Pennsylvania.

Our First Paper Publication!

Our project with the ACLU of Pennsylvania has resulted in a paper that has been accepted for the Data Science for Social Good workshop, The Web Conference 2020.

Our paper, titled “Investigating Cash Bail Patterns in Pennsylvania”, analyses the cash bail system in Pennsylvania, with a key focus being the racial bias in cash bail assignment patterns. Through their work, the team were able to develop a pipeline for identifying racial bias and conclusively establish that bail assignment patterns do vary across judges.
